Part-Time Bailiff
Box Elder County has an opening for Part-Time Bailiffs. The Part-Time Bailiff assists the Court Security department working with inmates in County Jail in accordance with established policies, regulations, and statutes, while assuming responsibility for all needs of the inmates in custody. This position is not covered under Deputy Sheriff Merit Law.
Those interested in this position must be a high school graduate or equivalent; possess Utah State POST certification as a Law Enforcement, Special Function or Correction Officer; be able to react effectively in emergency and stress situations; must be at least 21 years of age; must possess a valid Utah Driver’s License; must be willing to work a flexible schedule in order to cover shifts as needed; must complete 40 hours of training per year to maintain certification; must have good communication skills and working knowledge of English language; must have ability to act/react with public; must have no criminal history or records of arrest, except minor traffic and no record of alcohol or drug use.

GENERAL PURPOSE
Assists the Court Security department working with inmates in County Jail in accordance with established policies, regulations and statutes, while assuming responsibility for all needs of the inmates in custody. This position is not covered under Deputy Sheriff Merit Law.

Works under the general guidance and direction of the Court Security Sergeant.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
- Supervises prisoners in transit between jail, courtroom, prisons, work details, or other points.
- Carries out specific plans or programs to insure safety of court personnel and protection of facilities;
- Provides security for courtrooms during proceedings and for court facilities, judges and staff;
- Acts as court Bailiff, opening court by announcing entrance of judge, seating witnesses and jurors, carrying out instructions of judge, and taking evidence into custody.
- Supervises inmates in county jail in accordance with established policies, regulations and procedures while assuming responsibility for all needs (physical, medical, etc.) of the prisoners during detention;
- Performs various tasks associated with inmate admissions, such as, preparing arrest records including reports, bookings, releases, fingerprinting and mug shot photography;
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Education and Experience:

- Graduation from High School or GED certification required.
- Certification from Utah State POST as a Law Enforcement, Special Function or Corrections Officer.
- Ability to react effectively in emergency and stress situations.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must possess a valid Utah Driver’s License.
- Must be willing to work a flexible schedule in order to cover shifts as needed.
- Must complete 40 hours of training per year to maintain certification.

- Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Some knowledge of the basic principles of psychology and sociology as they relate to detention of inmates; some knowledge of elementary first-aid techniques and procedures; considerable knowledge of the fundamentals of proper search and seizure; considerable knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations related to jail activities.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain working relationships with inmates, the public and other departments; ability to observe situations, record them and react quickly and calmly; ability to deal effectively and courteously with fellow law officers and the public; ability to act with impartiality; ability to restrain physically violent inmates ability to react quickly to various situations under conditions of stress; ability to plan, organize and control the operations within the jail in order to maximize efficiency of jail activities.

Required to participate in the Physical Testing that is held twice a year. This testing will consist of either an obstacle course or standard testing utilizing Utah POST Exit Standards as the guideline.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be a graduate of POST with Law Enforcement, Special Function or Corrections Officer Certification.
Must have a valid Utah Driver’s License.
Must be able to perform essential functions of job.
Must be able work flexible shifts.
