RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR AGRICULTURAL CROPS AND GARDEN PRODUCE

 

1. Exhibits will be accepted on Tuesday, August 20, from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Wednesday, August 21 from 7 to 9  am.

2. Entries are restricted to residents of Box Elder County.

3. Only one entry per person of the same kind or variety will be accepted.

4. The entry must include the exact number of specimens as identified in the class list or it will not be accepted or judged.

5. All exhibits must have been grown by the exhibitor.

6. All entries will be judged on their own merit and judging is closed to the public.

7. All vegetables and fruit exhibits should be as near market maturity and quality and as fresh as possible.

8. All specimens in the exhibit should be of the same color, size, shape, maturity, and variety.

9. Specimens should be clean and free of soil and blemishes caused by insects, bruising, wind, etc.

10. Exhibitors must be 5 years of age or older.

11. Judging of exhibits will begin at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 21.

12. EXHIBITS IN THE CROP BARN WILL BE RELEASED AT 9:30 PM ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 24th.  THE SUPERVISORS WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR CROP EXHIBITS OR RIBBONS UNCLAIMED AFTER 10 P.M. ON SATURDAY, AUG. 24th.

13. IT IS THE EXHIBITOR'S RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE THE EXHIBITS ARE ENTERED IN THE PROPER CLASS.

14. Class Criteria are as follows:

Lot 9 - Special Exhibit - Limit one entry per family in each class

Only one 1st ($15), 2nd ($10), and 3rd ($5) place ribbon will be awarded in each class. All other entries will receive a $5 participant premium.

129. Harvest Basket - must include six or more classes with each meeting the individual class requirement and being grown by the exhibitor.

130. Pepper Basket - must include four or more types & varieties of peppers with each meeting the individual class requirements.

131. Salsa Basket - must include four different vegetables that would be used to create fresh salsa. Each vegetable used in the basket should meet the individual class requirements.

132. Tomato Basket - must include four or more types of varieties of tomatoes with each meeting the individual class requirements.

133. Fruit Basket - must include four or more varieties of fruits with each meeting the individual class requirements of varieties of fruit with each meeting the individual class requirements.


Lot 10 - Let’s Get Growing Contest

The Box Elder County Junior Master Gardener program is continuing the “Let’s Get Growing” contest.  The purpose of the contest is to promote an interest in gardening for youth and provide the opportunity to grow a plant not typically grown in our area.  Each year a different plant will be sponsored and seeds provided at no charge to participants in May.  At the fair, there will be a class judged specifically for that plant.  The contest is open to all registered 4-H youth.

 

This year the plant to be grown will be Batwing Pumpkins.  This contest will accept only entries grown from seeds provided to participants.

Lot 11 - Faircrow (Scarecrow) Contest

Premium: First Place $25, Second place $20, Third place $15, all others $5

Rules for Scarecrow Contest:

  1. Limit of one scarecrow per household.
  2. Only entries created in the current Fair year will be accepted
  3. Entries must be hand-made and should incorporate natural materials
  4. Designs must be in good taste and suitable for family viewing.  
  5. Scarecrow must be at least 3′, but not more than 6′ tall,
  6. Exhibitors must supply their own means of anchoring the scarecrow, such as stakes, rods, pins, etc.  
  7. The following will not be allowed:
  • No kits may be used
  • Animatronic/electric parts are not permitted.  
  • No commercial costumes, rubber or plastic masks, etc.
  • Exhibits which display material of a controversial or political nature will not be permitted. 
  • Use of copyrighted or trademarked characters or logos are not allowed.  This includes but not limited to TV, Movie, Video, etc. characters.   The use of the 4-H and FFA emblems are allowed
  • Items that represent or can be used as weapons will not be allowed on display.
  • No hand-outs can be associated with a scarecrow entry.

8. We reserve the right to remove any that do not meet these standards.

2024 Award Announcement

Outstanding Performance in Gardening

This award is to recognize individuals who earn excellent placing based on all their crop entries. This comprehensive prize will be awarded at the directors’ choice.

Outstanding Performance awards will be presented along with a $25 premium. If no participants meet the qualifications, then no award will be presented.


Youth Vegetable Judging Contest

The Vegetable Judging Contest for youth will be held Thursday, Aug. 29, from 3-5 p.m. in the Crops Barn. This contest is open to youth ages 8-18. Participants are graded on their ability to judge multiple classes of vegetables in areas including market maturity, size, shape, and absence of disease and blemishes. Age categories are as follows: Junior 8-10, Intermediate 11-13, and Senior 14-18. Prizes are awarded in each category.


Box Elder County Fair Hay Judging Contest

There will be two classes of four (4) hay samples with a variety of ranges in quality.

Classes will be displayed from Thursday to Saturday at the Box Elder County Fair with contest entry forms available.  Any fair attendee wishing to participate in the competition will be able to enter the contest by judging each of the two classes and answering the questions on the judging scorecard.

The contest closes on Saturday afternoon and the results will be posted on Saturday evening of the fair.

The entry with the most correct information will receive prizes from our contest sponsors.

 

BALED HAY CONTEST

Hay Contest Rules

1. Samples must be entered at the Crops Barn at the Box Elder County Fairgrounds on Tuesday, Aug. 20, between the hours of 1-8 p.m. or Wednesday, August 21 from 8 to 11 am.

2. Exhibitors will compete by entering one small bale or 3 to 4 slabs of a large bale.

3. Five classes of hay will be accepted.

Lot 1: First cutting of alfalfa

Lot 2: Second cutting of alfalfa

Lot 3: Third and fourth cutting of alfalfa

Lot 4: Grass hay

Lot 5 Grass and Alfalfa mix

4. There is a limit of one entry per class per farm.

5. Hay must have been grown in Box Elder County by the exhibitor.

6. Judging will be based on:

a. 70% NIR Forage Analysis

b. 30% Hay Sensory Evaluation

7. Entries containing noxious weeds will be disqualified.

 

Baled Hay Awards: Grand, Reserve, and Honorable Mention Overall; 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each class.
