Top 10 Tips for Visiting Spiral Jetty

This week, we are spotlighting Spiral Jetty! Here are my Top 10 tips for planning a trip to the Spiral Jetty! Let me know if I missed an important tip in the comments below, or even share a favorite photo of the Spiral Jetty with us!

The Spiral Jetty was built in 1970, is located off Rozel Point, in the Great Salt Lake, just west of the Golden Spike National Historic Park. It is 1,500 feet long and 15 feet wide. The Spiral Jetty was created by American Sculptor, Robert Smithson.
Whether it is your 1st visit to the Spiral Jetty or you’ve been going since it was created 51 years ago, here are my top 10 tips for visiting this unique piece of art.

#1---Be Prepared. Bring extra water, snacks and a picnic lunch. Bring water for both drinking and to rinse off your legs & feet. Fuel up your vehicle in Corinne or Brigham City. The Spiral Jetty is in the middle of nowhere. Once you leave Corinne, there are no other stops for fuel or food.

#2---Bring an extra pair of sandals/boots. Your footwear will get muddy. If you don’t want to track the mud in your vehicle, bring an extra pair of shoes to slip on for the drive home. Bring a towel, if you plan to play in the water.

#3---Pack sunscreen, a hat, bug spray and a First Aid kit. Better to be safe than sorry.

#4---Take a break at the Golden Spike National Historic Park. See the famous Jupiter & 119 Locomotives. Use the restroom (last stop for restrooms). Grab a map for the Rozel Point & Spiral Jetty.

#5---Don’t forget your binoculars and a good camera! The sunrises and sunsets are absolutely stunning at the Spiral Jetty! Depending on the time of year, you may even see pink water. If you are a bird watcher, you’ll definitely want your binoculars. The Spiral Jetty is a great place to see birds!

#6---Whatever you pack in, pack it out! There are no trash cans at the Spiral Jetty! Do not start campfires, trample vegetation or disturb the artwork.

#7---There is no cell service at the Spiral Jetty. Let someone know where you are going and when you plan to be back. Grab a map at the Golden Spike National Historic Site or print off a map from Google to find the Spiral Jetty. The Spiral Jetty is remote, and one wrong turn and you’ll be lost.

#8---Check the weather ahead of time. A dirt road leads to the Spiral Jetty. If it has been raining or snowing, you do not want to be stuck in the mud/snow. Bring your spare tire. Again, just be prepared because you are in a very remote area.

#9---On the way to the Spiral Jetty, stretch your legs at the Chinese Arch or the Northrop Grumman Rocket Gardens. Grab a bite to eat at Golden Spike Burgers or snacks & drinks at Bear River Valley Country Store in Corinne.

#10---Bring a small glass jar to collect any salt crystals, unique pebbles or other interesting objects. The Dia Art Foundation asks that you do not take any rocks from the art piece.
