Truth in Taxation Hearing – Box Elder County

The Truth in Taxation hearing is a public hearing process that allows Box Elder County residents to learn about and comment on the County’s proposed increase in property tax revenues. If you have questions or concerns, please share them using this Google Form QR Code by Monday at 9 PM. The County Commissioners and County Auditor will review all submitted questions beforehand and address them during the public hearing.

Please Note: Action is not expected to be taken at this meeting. The County Commission intends to act on their findings at the November 19th Commission Meeting, with final budget approval planned for the December 4th Commission Meeting.

Proposed Increases

 

General Fund Tax Increase

Why? To address rising costs due to inflation, employee salary and benefit adjustments, and to maintain an emergency reserve as allowed by Utah Law. The General Fund balance has been steadily decreasing, and the county needs to maintain a healthier reserve.

-Increase Amount: $2,000,000

-Percentage Increase: 21.91%

-Impact on $442,000 Residence: +$64.87 annually (from $296.10 to $360.97)

-Impact on $442,000 Business: +$117.94 annually (from $538.36 to $656.30)

Library Tax Increase

Why? To fund key projects, such as replacing aging bookmobiles, ensuring the bookmobile can maintain and upgrade equipment and facilities. Current funding covers basic operations but is insufficient for capital improvements.

-Increase Amount: $100,000

-Percentage Increase: 25.34%

-Impact on $488,000 Residence: +$6.33 annually (from $24.96 to $31.29)

-Impact on $488,000 Business: +$11.50 annually (from $45.38 to $56.88)
