Enter Your Exhibit Online:

Online Exhibit Registration Confirmation:

  • The online entry website will send a confirmation email to the fair.
  • You do not need to bring paperwork with your exhibit.

Eligibility:

  • Entries are reserved for Box Elder County residents only.

Delivery of Exhibits:

  • Exhibits must be delivered to the Home Arts Building at the Fairgrounds on Tuesday, August 20th between 1:00 PM and 8:00 PM.
  • Pre-Registration is Required for Fine Arts

Important Notes:

  • Items entered in the fair are at the owner's risk. We cannot be responsible for the loss or damage of any articles.
  • Items brought in later than specified will be too late to be judged.
  • If items cannot be left for exhibit until 9:30 PM on Saturday, August 24th, please do not enter your items.
  • All premiums/monies not picked up by the close of the fair on Saturday, August 24th, will be returned to general funds.

Collection of Exhibits:

  • Supervisors will be on hand to return exhibits starting at 9:30 PM on Saturday, August 24th.
  • We will not be responsible for exhibits or premiums not collected by 10:30 PM on Saturday.
  • You can also pick up exhibits on Monday, August 26th from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

 

Fine Arts Special Rules for All Classes

  1. Fine Arts Entries are REQUIRED to Pre-Register Online July 15th until August 18th at 10:59 pm:

*NOTE: When registering, under Description, list media and a brief description of your entry. For help, see the “Online Entry Instructions” on the General Fair Information page of the fair book. 

 

  1. Reasonable precautions will be taken in handling all entries, but the Fair Board and its management cannot assume liability for loss or damage to submitted works. 
  2. The following information must be written or attached to the back of each entry: Exhibitor’s name and phone number.
  3. Due to the Fair’s family-oriented atmosphere, entries containing questionable themes will be rejected.  This includes, but is not limited to nudity, weapons, blood, violence, satanic, cult, or gang themes. 
  4. Entry to the Box Elder County Fair Fine Arts Show is open to all artists who are current residents of Box Elder County.
  5. ALL artworks must be entirely the work of the artist. No paint-by-numbers, coloring book pages, etc. will be accepted. They may be entered in Home Arts under Crafts & Hobbies.
  6. Work entered in previous fairs may not be entered again.
  7. Paintings with the paint still wet will not be accepted.

FINE ARTS CLASSES

 

Each artist must classify him/herself in ONE of the following CLASSES:

  • CLASS A – Professional (19 and up)  Those who have a degree or extensive training and are actively engaged in the art field for financial gain.
  • CLASS B – Semi-Professional (19 and up) Those who have a degree or training in fine arts. This classification is a matter of ability and attitude more than career. 
  • CLASS C – Advanced Amateur (19 and up)Those who have some training and consistently strive to produce and improve their art.--New for 2024: Advance Amateur and up: 2 entries per person per category allowed. (Maximum total entries 6). 
  • CLASS D – Amateur (19 and up) Those who have little or no training in art and are creating for enjoyment.
  • CLASS E – Sr Citizen – (65 and up)
  • CLASS F – Young Amateur (15-18) 
  • CLASS G – Youth (11-14)
  • CLASS H – Children’s (8-10) 
  • CLASS I – Children’s (5-7)  
  • CLASS J – Children’s (0-4)
  • CLASS K - Written & Illustrated Literature (all ages)
  • CLASS L – Poetry (all ages)
  • CLASS M –New for 2024 Song Writing (all ages) 

 


FINE ARTS CATEGORIES / MEDIUMS

Advance Amateur and up: 2 entries per person per category allowed. (Maximum total entries 6). 

Ages 11 through Amateur: only 1 entry per person per category allowed.

  1. Oil
  2. Acrylic
  3. Watercolor, Gouache, etc. 
  4. Drawing:  Pencil, Ink, Marker, Watercolor Pencil, Colored Pencil, Scratchboard, etc.
  5. Drawing/Painting:  Chalk, Pastel, Charcoal, Conté Crayon, Graphite, Mixed Media, etc.
  6. Printmaking:  Woodcut, Linocut, Engraving, Drypoint, Etching, Aquatint, Screenprint, Monoprint, Lithography, etc.
  7. Sculpture:  Clay, Stone, Metal, Wood, Polymer Clay, Wax, Marble, Assemblage, Papier-mâché, etc.
  8. Pottery:  Porcelain, Earthenware, Stoneware, Ball Clay, etc.  MUST be hand-built or wheel-thrown, kiln-fired, and the ENTIRE work of the artist from greenware stage to the finished piece.
  9. Paper Art:  Collage, Paper-cutting, Quilling, etc.
  10. Digital Art:  Digital art is an artistic practice that uses digital technology as part of the creative process. Entries must be ORIGINAL digital work created by the artist, including digital illustrations.
  11. Other:  Mixed Media, Fluid Art, etc.

How to Prepare Entries for Hanging

Preparing Entries for Hanging - Ages 11 Through Adult

Because artwork ages 11 through adult will be hung on large hooks, the following is required:  

 

  1. Hanging art (including illustration board, paper, canvas board, etc.) MUST BE SECURELY FRAMED AND READY-TO-HANG WITH HANGING WIRE (equipped with screw eyes and wires; no strings or cords). It is very important that your artwork comes ready to be hung!
  2. Canvas-stretched artwork may be framed or unframed but must have screw eyes and wire on the back. The wire should not show above the frame. 
  3. Please visit Mountain Valley Printing for help with wires and hangers.

 

Preparing Entries for Hanging - Children Ages 10 and Younger

 

  1. Only one entry per child will be accepted due to limited space. All mediums (paint, crayon, pencil, etc.) including class/school art are accepted. 
  2. Children’s art will be hung with Velcro or curtain hooks on a carpet-covered wall. 

           NO FRAMED ARTWORK CAN BE ACCEPTED therefore:

  • Art sized 8½ x 11 must be placed in sheet protectors.  
  • Larger artwork may or may not be shrink-wrapped. 
  • Paintings on canvas board require plastic hanger(s) centered on the back, 1-2” below the top.
  • Paintings on stretched canvas require screw eyes and wire.
  1. Children’s entries, ages 0 to 4, will not be judged but will each receive a participation ribbon and $1 premium.

 


FINE ARTS AWARDS

 

  1. All judged entries will be awarded a ribbon and a premium and will be judged on the following: 
  • Overall composition
  • Originality
  • Skill, technique and
  • Presentation
  1. Judges may use discretion in awarding competitive ribbons. Their decisions will be final.
  2. Sweepstakes, Reserve Sweepstakes, and Special Merit awards will also receive a Gift Certificate from Mountain Valley Printing along with their fair premiums.
  3. You can pick up premiums in the Home Arts Building beginning Thursday at 10 a.m. until Saturday at 10 p.m.

LORI NICHOLAS PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS - One Adult Award (ages 19 and up) and One Child/Youth Award (ages 5–18):

During the fair, the public will be allowed to vote for their favorite artwork. These special ribbons and cash awards will be given to one adult and one youth, in remembrance of renowned local Western artist and former Fine Arts director, Lori Nicholas (1951-2019).  

  • Only one vote per adult and one vote per youth/child, per person, will be allowed. 
  • Look for numbered stickers on artwork tags (except children’s). Select your two number choices (or child’s name) and report them to the Fine Arts supervisor on duty. 
  • Voting begins Wednesday at 6 pm and ends Friday at 10 pm.
  • People’s Choice cash awards will be available for pick-up on Saturday in the Home-Arts Building (with premiums).

 


WRITTEN ARTS CLASSES

  • CLASS K - Written & Illustrated Literature (all ages)
  • CLASS L – Poetry (all ages)
  • CLASS M –Song Writing (all ages) 

Written Arts Special Rules

  1. All written art must be the original work of the exhibitor.
  2. Entries must be typed or neatly handwritten. Presentation WILL be considered in judging.
  3. Only ONE ENTRY per exhibitor per class in written arts is allowed for judging. Additional entries by the same exhibitor will be for display only and will not be judged or receive a ribbon.
  4.  Schoolwork is accepted as long as it is the individual work of the student.
  5. Judges may use discretion in awarding competitive ribbons. Their decisions will be final.

 

Class K – Written & Illustrated Literature (all ages)

  1. Literature entries will need to have a cover, an author page, and can be bound in any form: professionally bound, binder, folder, stapled, binder rings, etc. 
  2. Neatness counts. Be sure your project is clean, neat, and organized.

Class L- Poetry Rules (all ages)

  1. Poetry may be presented in sheet protectors OR framed and ready to hang with picture frame wire or a plastic hanger. 

Class M - Songwriting Rules (all ages)

  1. Songs and music must be original and sheet music may be typed or neatly handwritten. 
  2. Songs may be presented in a binder or 3-pronged folder with sheet protectors. 
  3. Optional: Create a QR code to an online audio link of your song being played. Print it on a 4x6" card and include it with your entry so that judges and fairgoers may listen to your song.

Fair Book Cover Contest 

Congratulations to Sophia Moore from Bear River High School for being selected as the cover artist for our 2024 Box Elder County Fair Book!

Every spring the Fair Book Cover Contest is open to ALL students in Box Elder County, grades 8-12 (ages 13-18). The winning cover receives $20 and a family rodeo pass. One runner-up will receive a $10 food court pass.  Ten honorable mentions will each receive $5 food court passes.
